Leading Without Burning Out

How Anthesis rebuilt energy and resilience across their senior leadership team

What does it take to lead in sustainability… sustainably? For Anthesis, it meant redefining how energy, clarity, and calm fuel performance.

When impact comes at a personal cost

Anthesis is one of the world’s leading sustainability consultancies: full of smart, driven people working on urgent, planet-wide challenges. But that level of responsibility can take its toll.

After a corporate acquisition, their senior leadership team found themselves under intense pressure.

  • Boundaries were blurred.
  • Stress was constant.
  • Morale was fading.
  • And despite the mission, many were quietly on the edge of burnout.

The challenge?

To sustain performance without sacrificing wellbeing, and to do it in a culture that had grown disjointed, dehumanised, and stretched too thin.

What we did: A leadership program for the whole human

This is one of our flagship programs: delivered in 4x 90-minute sessions, this leadership program is grounded in nervous system science, energy management, and personal integrity.

Before we begin, each participant completes a psychometric profile and an energy self-assessment to map out how they are showing up: mentally, emotionally, and physically.

Then, week by week, we rebuild their internal leadership foundation.

Week 1: Awareness & Energy

Leaders discovered how to shift their internal state: from scattered and tense to focused and calm. They learned self-regulation techniques, and began to see how even small actions (like breathing or grounding) could reset their entire day.

“It doesn’t take much to completely reset my approach.”

Lucy Dwyer

Week 2: Decompression

We explored how to process stress; not just tolerate it. Leaders were given tools to decompress quickly, reset between meetings, and stop the emotional residue of work from building up inside.

“I’ve learned to shift perspectives, turning challenging or mundane settings into a boost rather than a drain.”

James Wallis

Week 3: Nervous System Flexibility

Through flow techniques and dynamic energy work, the team learned how to switch modes: to meet each moment with the right kind of presence, and stop being hijacked by reactive stress responses.

“I’ve learned to handle challenging situations and conflict directly, without letting the pressure build up.”

Emma Lindsay

Week 4: Integration & Ritualise

We ended by helping each leader design their own daily rituals to sustain this change. The emphasis was on integration, making the tools stick in their day-to-day, through rhythm, reflection, and support from each other.

What Changed?

By the end of the program, the data told the story:

  • 🔋 +44.75% increase in energy
  • 🌬️ +39.50% improvement in decompression
  • 🧠 +10% boost in perceived control
  • 🕰️ +5.75% gain in time capacity
  • 🌀 +9.5% improvement in stress regulation

More importantly, the leaders themselves reported feeling:

  • Grounded and resilient.
  • More connected to themselves and their team.
  • Better equipped to perform with clarity, empathy, and presence.

“I am now in a much calmer, more thoughtful space from which I can approach my day-to-day work, overcome the ongoing corporate frictions in order to perform in a sustainable and healthy way.”

    JAMES WALLIS

    Imagine this in your team

If your leaders are operating in high-stakes, mission-driven environments, but paying the price in stress or disconnection: it might be time to approach leadership development from the inside out.
