How Elsevier’s Global Sales Team Reconnected Across Cultures, Time Zones, and Personalities
In a hybrid, global organisation, the biggest opportunity for cohesion lies in understanding ourselves – and each other – better.
A pivotal moment for team culture
At Elsevier’s World Sales Conference in Bangkok, the timing was right. A change in leadership had opened the door for a team restructure: and with it, a fresh opportunity to build unity across a complex, global sales organisation.
Spread across continents, time zones, and functions, the team of 180 had grown disconnected. Different working styles, blurred relationships, and remote silos had weakened the sense of shared culture and team identity.
Leadership recognised that if they wanted to position the sales team for success – commercially and culturally – they needed to reconnect their people.
A full-day immersion into who we are, how we work, and what connects us
We ran a high-energy, full-day Enneagram experience, tailored for a global audience. In collaboration with our high performance coach Angie Ford, we brought the Enneagram to life through:
Interactive games and group reflection.
Multimedia learning experiences.
High-impact facilitation, tailored to a diverse, multi-layered team.
Participants explored their Enneagram types: understanding not just their own patterns, but how others experience the world. We looked at:
Strengths and blind spots
Communication styles under pressure
How to build connection across cultural, emotional, and interpersonal difference
The space was reflective, energised, and deeply human.
What changed?
By the end of the day:
People were speaking more openly about how they show up.
New bridges were built between team members who barely knew each other before.
There was laughter, insight, and a felt sense of ‘we’re in this together’.
“It was the highlight of this 3-day event. We have had so much fun.”
Xuanyan Xu
“A great team-building exercise to give us insight on how to leverage our strengths and minimize our weaknesses collectively.”
Amy Nielsen
“It allows me to explore how different styles can efficiently work together, how they complement each other to achieve more than just the sum of their individual skills.”
Jean-Dominique Pierret
“Self – insights gained in a safe supportive environment and an understanding of the benefits of different personalities to problem solving.”
Theresa Buiel
“This has really opened my eyes to the needs that others may have and given me tools for ensuring I can meet people where they may be.”
Joe McCarthy
The Enneagram gave Elsevier’s sales team something no reorg or org chart could deliver: a shared language, mutual understanding, and the foundation of trust: across continents and cultures.
